Being BOTH The Professional AND The CEO In Your Practice with Mindy Totten, LMT, CST: Episode 184
Being BOTH The Professional AND The CEO In Your Practice
Many of us choose the modality that we learned in our professional studies because we had a life-changing personal experience with that type of care.
So we dive into starting a new career with the hope that we can help a lot of people… and then often find that starting and growing a business is a lot harder than we expected it to be.
Unfortunately, at this point many people give up on their dreams and shut down their businesses.
Instead, my guest Mindy Totten and I hope that this episode will help more people seek resources and support so they can go from surviving to thriving in their businesses.
In this episode of the podcast, Mindy and I cover:
- The transformation that Mindy experienced that led her to leave her teaching career and become a Craniosacral Therapist
- What Mindy thought starting a business would be like that caused her to struggle… and what she did to change it
- Why thinking positively and having a vision aren’t enough to really grow your business and how to know when you’re avoiding the real work
- Why the business-side of your practice is just as important as the clinical-side of your practice
- The paradox of the minimal business education in healthcare degree and certification programs
- What Mindy finds to be the most effective for both herself and her clients in growing their programs (Hint: it’s NOT posting every day on social media!)
- Why you have to be both great at what you do with the hands-on care that provide AND a great business owner
- The surprising relationship between improving your skillset as a practitioner and narrowing your target market
- Why “I just want to get more clients” isn’t a vision for your practice

CREDENTIALS OF GUEST
I know what you’re going through and how you’re feeling because I’ve been there myself. I got into the business because I wanted to help others get the relief I had found from bodywork.
In 1993, my husband and I decided to sell everything we owned and move overseas. Through the years, we lived and worked in Berlin, Istanbul, and Singapore, while traveling to and exploring as many exotic places as we could.
I taught Humanities in international schools until I became quite ill with a variety of conditions that did not respond to mainstream medicine. My illness led me on the path for alternatives, including CranioSacral Therapy, which helped me to heal and become whole once again. I vowed that if I got well that I would help others in the same way.
Fast forward a couple of years... and now I have a full practice with a waiting list of clients. I make six figures working three days a week. I love my clients, the work I do, and I have plenty of time to hang out at the beach {my happy place} with my husband and awesome dog, George. I've designed a business {and a life} that works for me.
And I’m here to help you do the same.
